Like many Americans, you may be stuck in an unchallenging job for which you are over-qualified. Even though the economy has improved, a lot of workers are still struggling to realize their career dreams because they can’t progress from the entry-level job that’s holding them back. Here are some steps entry-level workers can take to get promoted to a better job.
Ask for feedback
Don’t be afraid to reach out to your manager for feedback on your performance. Lay out your concerns and then listen. You may be surprised by the information your manager shares, so be sure to take good notes. Use this time to get as much information as possible about what you need to do to get a promotion and how your company may be able to help you. In addition to your boss, talk to your colleagues. Ask them for an assessment of your strengths and areas for improvement. Armed with this information, you can develop a plan of action to progress beyond your entry-level job.
Reach out to a mentor
Do you have a mentor or two? A mentor is someone who has already achieved what you are dreaming about. This person may be able to help you. Ask and see what happens. You can gain the strategic advantage by having several different types of mentors who can help you navigate to a higher level role using your entry-level job as a launching pad.
Pursue a master’s degree
Another way to further your career is by pursuing an advanced degree.
